Foot Problems from Diabetes
Foot Problems from Diabetes
It is recommended that people with Diabetes see a Sarah Sweeney Podiatrist regularly to avoid foot complications from occurring. If you see your Podiatrist regularly, someone is looking after your feet, looking out for any problems or future issues and educating you about proper foot care.
People with Diabetes are at a higher risk of developing foot problems such as Neuropathy, Infection, Ulceration and Amputation. There are many ways that Diabetes can affect the feet, but the two most common complications are...
- Nerve pain
- A reduction in blood flow that causes a loss of sensation
Nerve damage and loss of sensation is, unfortunately, a prevalent complication of Diabetes.
Nerve Pain in feet from Diabetes
Nerve pain in your feet can feel like numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation. Circulation issues and poor blood flow mean less blood flows down to your feet, which can delay healing. This is why infection, ulceration, and amputation are more common in people with Diabetes. Poor blood flow can also cause thickened or unhealthy nails and dry, callused skin.
Loss of sensation from diabetes
Loss of sensation in the feet brings the following risks....
- You won’t feel when you walk on a sharp object or burning hot ground
- You won't feel when you have a pebble in your shoe, a cut, or a blister on your foot
- Loss of sensation affects your balance and walking because you can’t feel your feet.
Even if you are not currently suffering from diabetes, we recommend seeing a Sarah Sweeney Podiatrist annually for a Diabetic Assessment to perform a series of tests.
